What every parent should know about failure - ALOHA Mind Math

What every parent should know about failure We would like to be able to protect our children from all the difficult things in life. Sometimes though, it may be better to not jump in for all the small stumbles, and allow them to deal with the challenges that school or friends throw at them. It could be about dealing with a bad grade at school, or not doing well enough at sports, and though as parents we must provide encouragement and support, it provides good experience to the child if they can figure out the way to success by themselves. The best way for a child to develop better academic skills is to learn how to get over failure and learn how to solve problems by himself. We can contribute by helping with learning plans, but it is upto the child to understand what the best strategy for himself would be. If we keep planning out the way in all detail, we are not enabling our children to make their own way in the world, and instead only spoonfeeding our learning strategies and techniques onto them. Times are changing and the internet has made it so easy to access all information, that our child would be best suited to find how to make best use of it for the purpose of education. Make sure that the child is exposed to tales of science and scientists, and even histories of world leaders, all of which will show her how the famous saying about “Failure being a stepping stone to success” really is possible. Even in fine arts, you will find many examples of authors like Leo Tolstoy who battled the writers block and rose again to give us great masterpieces. Exploring the etymology of phrases like “Try, try, try again” would also be an interesting activity to do with your child. The important thing for your child to realize is that failure is never the end, it is only a small setback if at all, and should be treated as such. It is important to stay encouraging and not blame the child for failures, as this would hurt their spirit. As the child grows older and understands better how to get the best out of failures, they will be better equipped to face any situation with a positive attitude. Teacher retention Once you hire the perfect candidate, how do you hold on to them [Research report]

Teacher retention Once you hire the perfect candidate, how do you hold on to them [Research report] As the international teacher job market continues to heat up, the topic of teacher retention is undoubtedly on each and every international school leader’s mind. As well it should be: integral to building and maintaining a successful international school is attracting - and keeping - a great team of teachers on staff. At Teach Away, we’ve seen see this fact borne out time and time again; international schools with significantly lower teacher attrition rates experience stronger student learning outcomes and a corresponding boost in student enrollment. And they are also, invariably, the very schools that continue to grow and thrive, even in today’s highly competitive international education marketplace. On the flipside, high teacher turnover is a huge drain on many international schools’ financial and human resources. While some level of attrition is, of course, inevitable, a higher-than-average teacher turnover rate can be detrimental to your school’s performance, resulting as it inevitably does in lost expertise and diminishing teaching quality. While perhaps many of you may assume that international educators are more likely to leave their current teaching position due to salary, the reality is that a number of diverse factors play a role in contributing to higher teacher turnover. You’ll likely already be well aware of some fundamental ways to reduce teacher turnover, like hiring for the right cultural fit and keeping your compensation and benefits in line with other schools in your region However, Teach Away’s latest recruiting trends report (based on a survey of more than 10,000 international teaching candidates) recently identified three additional strategies to help you retain great teachers and increase job satisfaction at your school. Keep reading to find out: 1. Make sure you have a solid onboarding process in place. Source: Teach Away’s International Education Recruitment Report 2017 A successful onboarding process could be the secret weapon you need to bring your teachers’ job satisfaction and retention to the next level. Onboarding isn’t just about getting all that paperwork signed and day one on the job done and dusted, though. As recent hire turnover continues to be a significant issue for many international schools, having a structured onboarding process cannot be overlooked. The first days, weeks and even months can often determine whether a teacher chooses to stay at your school long term. We’ve seen that international schools with a comprehensive onboarding strategy experience a significantly reduced likelihood of attrition within the first few months, compared with schools with a weaker - or often nonexistent - onboarding process. So don’t just hire a great teacher and cross your fingers. Ensure you have a solid onboarding process in place to make your new hire feel welcome, prepared for their new role and fully integrated into your school culture, mission and values. A quality onboarding process will pay for itself in the long run when your teacher decides to stay long term, in large part due to the positive experience they’ve had at your school right from the outset. 2. Don’t forget that effective pre-onboarding matters, too. A fundamental thing to realize about avoiding premature teacher turnover is that waiting until the first day to start onboarding is, in most cases, already too late. Before your new teacher even sets foot in your school, you need to have the right pre-departure support process in place to help them learn more about your school, their compensation package and specifics about the job. Pre-onboarding is, far and away, the best way to get your new teacher hire comfortable in their new role and teaching environment and - most crucially of all - invested in the prospect of working at your school. At Teach Away for example, the average lead time between a teacher accepting a job and starting is around four months. What does this mean? Well, it leaves more than enough time for uncertainty and self-doubt to set in. It's easy to forget how intimidating starting a new job can be - think of how tricky it can be for international educators who are moving far away from home and everything that is familiar to them! The important thing is to keep the candidate interested and to raise the excitement levels as the start date approaches. This means you need to make new hire pre-boarding a priority, which will, in turn, validate your teacher's decision to accept the job and get them excited to hit the ground running in their new school. 3. Make opportunities for development and growth at your school. Source: Teach Away’s International Education Recruitment Report 2017 Our international teacher survey identified the following factors that candidates most valued in their jobs. It was no big surprise to us that professional development came out on top: In addition to paying your teachers well (which undoubtedly plays an important role in motivating candidates to apply for your school in the first place), investing in their professional development is a fundamentally important strategy to reduce employee turnover. Your teachers want to feel like they’re gaining expertise and becoming more well-rounded international educators. Offering relevant professional development training programs not only helps you attract top job candidates and helps your current teachers perform better in their roles - it also helps you retain top educators for years to come. Professional development is a great way to boost job satisfaction - when your teachers feel they’re able to do their jobs more effectively, they become more confident and secure in their roles. What’s more, by including training and development opportunities on your job opening, you’ll also make your school more appealing to prospective candidates you offer your staff training and development opportunities. Think about it - you’ll be building a positive reputation as an international school that cares about its teachers and strives to employ only the most talented and motivated international educators. So there you have it - by embracing these actionable teacher retention strategies, your school will be well on its way to attracting and retaining the best international teachers, even in an increasingly competitive hiring landscape. Choosing Maths A-Level modules

Choosing Maths A-Level modules Students who are confident they will pass their GCSE maths exams this year may already be thinking about taking A-level maths next year. Depending on your school and exam board, you may have the option to choose which modules to take. A-level maths includes six modules, with each score of these modules contributing to the final grade. Most students compete three modules in one year, which will create an AS-level qualification in their own right and will complete the A-level course the following year with three more modules. Below we have listed a few A-level maths modules to help you make the right decision. Mathematics. Main A-level maths that covers trigonometry and calculus but could include other concepts depending on the exam boards and other courses your school may offer. If you are thinking of studying maths at university, this is the course for you but it's also useful for students wishing to take other courses such as science, engineering or economics. Pure mathematics. Pure and applied maths is also covered in the ordinary maths A-level course but if you are only interested in focusing on pure mathematics you may have the choice to take a pure maths course. Pure maths studies entirely abstract concepts with the trend towards meeting the needs of navigation, astronomy, physics and engineering to mention only a few. Statistics A-level statistics is about real world data, it includes concepts such as probability and estimation. Statistics is useful for business studies, economics or sociology although it's probably not the best choice if you wish to study maths at university because it doesn't contain any pure maths elements. Mechanics Considered to be one of the most demanding modules but if you are thinking of doing physics or engineering, the mechanics module is your best bet. You will learn the technique of mathematical modelling - turning a complicated physical problem into a simpler one that can be analysed and solved using mathematical methods. Use of mathematics. A new course that might not be available at your school or perhaps only at AS level. Use of mathematics doesn't include pure maths elements but focuses mainly on statistics and algebra and their uses in the practical world. Good option for students who want to extend their study of mathematics beyond GCSE but who are more interested in its application than in theoretical ideas. This course is not suitable for students aiming to study mathematics or an engineering course at university but is an acceptable A-level for many other courses such as business studies, biology, geography or psychology. Decision Mathematics This involves the study of algorithms and other methods used to solve problems involving networks. Applications included in this course could entail the design of circuits on microchips for example.

What is an Exothermic Chemistry Definition?

What is an Exothermic Chemistry Definition? An exothermic chemistry definition begins with the definition of exothermic. Exothermic is an energy. This energy then drives a reaction, which in turn creates more energy. This reaction is 'exchanged' by the release of heat.Heat is created by reactions in the chemical process known as 'oxygenation'. Oxygen is essential to life. If there was no oxygen in the air, then life as we know it would not exist. There are many types of exothermic reactions, and they occur in all life forms. These reactions are reactions that take place within cells, in biological systems, and within living things. These reactions include the formation of hydrogen, the interaction of oxygen with carbon dioxide (carbon monoxide), and oxidation reactions in which oxygen combines with other elements to create compounds. There are hundreds of types of these reactions and are known to occur in living things like yeast, plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria. All organisms and cells depend on some kind of exothermic reaction to survive and thrive. If the reaction does not take place, then the organism or cell will not be able to maintain its existence. Without oxygen, life cannot exist. Without food, life cannot exist. All biological systems, even the cells that create the compounds, need an exothermic chemical reaction to make them. This is the basis of all known biochemical reactions, as well as complex biological processes. Each biological system also has a storage form of energy, which are stored in the form of molecular bonds, and nuclear energy. These two forms of energy are also called 'kinetic energy'. Kinetic energy is usually thought of as being associated with things like wind and water, but there are many different kinds of kinetic energy, such as the natural force between magnets. The reaction of an electron moving from one atom to another atom is known as an electron transfer. Electron transfer allows atoms to link together to form molecules, which can then link together again and so on, until the reaction is complete. This process, called 'oxygenation', is known to occur in cellular systems as well as biological systems. In addition, the process of 'oxidation' is necessary to break down organic compounds, and that is also known to occur in biological systems. The above definitions of chemistry make up an entire description of what happens in an exothermic reaction. These are both internal and external processes. They go together, in a way that the exothermic processes (chemical) convert the internal processes (somatic) into exothermic processes (heat). When a reaction takes place, a change in molecular structure is made, and the heat used to form it is given off as heat, which is 'exchanged' by the formation of energy called 'heat'.
